How To Use Bounce Rates and Time on Site Metrics in AdWords

Besides linking Adwords and Analytics you should also import Google Analytics metrics into Adwords (a great feature that few advertisers know of).

Log in to Google AdWords -> Click on the settings wheel at the top right -> Account settings -> Linked Accounts -> Google Analytics

Click “Add” next to the property that you are advertising in the Adwords account. Then click save.

Now go back to your AdWords campaign overview and click Columns -> Customize columns -> Google Analytics.

Click the arrows next to “bounce rate” and “avg. session duration (seconds)” to add the columns.

You can now view this data on a campaign, ad group and keyword level.

Bounce rate and avg. session duration are great performance indicators. In some cases you need hundreds of visitors to be able to generate one conversion (i.e. a lead or sale).

Using bounce rate and avg. session duration metrics you can often tell much faster whether a campaign, ad group or keyword will perform well.

You can then perform optimizations earlier without having to waste ad dollars while waiting to generate a conversion.
